Field of Oral Biochemistry
Dr Henk Brand is a medical biologist and associate professor at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), where he works in the Department of Oral Biochemistry since 1996. His research focuses on the relationship between chronic systemic diseases and changes in saliva composition, including the identification of salivary biomarkers of underlying disease, particularly chronic inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis), renal diseases, and oral health of cancer survivors. He also investigates causes of reduced saliva secretion, and new therapies to reduce the associated dry mouth symptoms. His research has resulted in more than 250 articles in Pubmed-indexed scientific journals. In 2024, the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy awarded him a Doctor Honoris Causa degree for his research.
